Dental Services
Pediatric Dentistry (children’s dental care):
We enjoy seeing children in the office and make every effort to make the experience as fun as possible. At regular check-up and cleaning visits, we educate our young patients about their teeth and proper brushing and flossing habits. We also monitor growth of the jaws, tooth eruption patterns, and orthodontic alignment. If further treatment is necessary, we explain the process in terms kids can understand. And every visit ends with a dig through our treasure chest. A just reward for a job well done!
Cosmetic Dentistry:
Tooth Whitening
Thompson Family Dental offers the latest Zoom whitening as well as custom tray whitening and will be happy to help you choose the method that is best for you.
Composite Bonding
Many cosmetic concerns can be treated using a direct application of tooth-matching resins to achieve optimal esthetics. Direct composite bonding does not require removal of tooth structure or time in the dental laboratory, and therefore, is a very conservative and less costly way to achieve the smile esthetics you may desire.
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are a very popular way to achieve optimal smile esthetics with minimal tooth preparation. Porcelain veneers can be like “instant orthodontics” by closing spaces, and correcting rotations, and they also give us the ability to change the color, length, and contour of your natural teeth. Dr. Thompson will be happy to provide you with a smile analysis and advise you as to whether porcelain veneers are the best option for you.
Digital Radiographs
Digital imaging greatly reduces the exposure time required to get a diagnostic image of a tooth. Images are captured instantaneously on a small sensor and stored in your computerized chart. This results in greater safety, clearer images, and quicker diagnosis. Each of our treatment rooms features the state of the art Dexis digital imaging system.
Endodontics (root canal treatment)
Root canal treatment is performed as a way to save a tooth that has an irreversibly damaged pulp/nerve. The most common causes of tooth pulp damage are a cavity, a crack, or a traumatic blow. The root canal process relieves pain, treats or prevents infection, and prevents the loss of a tooth that would otherwise have to be extracted. Proper diagnosis is important, however, as many sensitive teeth can be treated more conservatively.
Oral Surgery (extractions)
Sometimes removal of a tooth is the best way to provide comfort, prevent infection, or improve function. If a tooth extraction is necessary, Dr. Thompson and his staff will provide you with all the information you need, talk you through the process, and make the procedure itself as simple as possible.
Restorative Care (fillings, onlays, crowns)
Today’s scientific composite resins and porcelain systems give us an artist’s palette of materials to restore teeth. Gone are the days where a chunk of silver or gold was our only choice. If a tooth is compromised because of a cavity, chip/fracture, or crack, it can be repaired with materials and techniques designed to duplicate the look, form, function, and feel of your natural tooth. Whether the tooth needs a filling, onlay, or crown is function of how much solid tooth structure remains. Of course, regular check-ups help to detect problems early, and can keep restorative solutions simple.
Prosthodontics (bridges, dentures, partial dentures)
Optimal chewing function and smile esthetics are the result of using the right materials in the right measure. Proper design of bridgework, dentures, or partial dentures, and execution of that design makes all the difference in the world. To that end, Dr. Thompson works hand in hand with the highest quality laboratory technicians, using the highest quality materials, to achieve the best in form and function for his patients.
Implant Prosthodontics (implant crown and bridgework, implant supported dentures)
The miracle of “osseointegration” allows us to replace the roots of missing teeth with titanium cylinders to which the jaw bone actually grows! These titanium implants act as a foundation on which crowns, bridges, or dentures can be made to replace missing teeth. A single missing tooth can be replaced without having to grind and anchor to adjacent teeth. Dentures can be made to attach to an implant foundation, allowing for “palate-less/u-shaped” upper dentures, and eliminating problems with looseness and sore spots. The treatment possibilities with dental implants are amazing! If you have questions about dental implants and how they might benefit you, call and schedule an implant evaluation today.
Prophy/Hygiene (dental cleanings, hygiene instruction)
Daily brushing, flossing, and regular professional cleanings are the most important things one can do to ensure good dental health. Brushing and flossing removes the soft bacterial plaque that forms on teeth daily. Professional cleanings remove mineralized hard deposits called calculus or “tartar” that cannot be removed by brushing or flossing alone. Regular efficient removal of plaque and tartar helps to prevent acid accumulation that is the cause of cavities and gum disease. For most patients “regular” means every 6 months. However, some patients form tartar more rapidly and are seen at 3 or 4 month intervals.
Periodontics (scaling/root planing, deep cleanings)
Periodontal disease is an insidious process, which results in the loss of the supporting gum and bone tissue around teeth. It is silent in its progression, and is caused primarily by an inflammatory response to plaque and tartar build-up under the gumline. Regular dental visits are important to allow early diagnosis, because regaining lost supporting tissues is unpredictable at best. The first phase of treatment for periodontal disease involves numbing the area with local anesthesia and meticulously removing all tartar. Re-evaluation after this “deep cleaning” treatment may reveal the need for additional periodontal surgical procedures. If further periodontal treatment is necessary, Dr. Thompson will advise you, and handle your referral to a trusted periodontal specialist.
TMJ (nightguard, bruxism splint)
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is unique in its function and mobility. The leverage and force produced by the TMJ is greater than any other joint in the body. Painful clicking, popping, or restricted opening of the jaw are common signs of inflammation in the joint itself, or in the associated muscles that control its movement. Seemingly unrelated symptoms such as earache, toothache, headache, and neck or shoulder pain can be caused by inflammation of this joint/muscle complex. Many of these symptoms, as well as severely worn or cracked teeth, are a result of a common clenching and grinding habit called bruxism. They can often be treated with a special nightguard designed to optimize the bite position and reduce stress on the TMJ complex at night, when many people unknowingly do their destructive grinding. If you have unresolved or recurrent symptoms as described above, call our office for an evaluation.
Snore Guard
An effective and non-invasive solution to snoring is a custom-made appliance commonly referred to as a snore guard. Most snoring is the result of a partial airway obstruction from the base of the tongue. The tongue is attached to the lower jaw. A snore guard opens the airway and reduces snoring by indexing and holding the lower jaw in a forward position while you sleep.
